There are many snorkeling reefs around Puerto Viejo. Some can be reached by bicycle (Punta Uva and Manzanillo). Others by bus (Cahuita).Punta Uva and Salsa Brava are our favorite snorkeling locations. Diving courses and trips are available through multiple dive shops, for all levels. Snorkel gear is available to rent in town.
The best surfing on the Caribbean Coast is at the famous ‘Salsa Brava.’ This famous surf spot is within walking distance from Cashew Hill, but is for experienced surfers only. There are many other surfing beaches, such as “Beach Break” at Playa Cocles, within the Puerto Viejo area. Lessons are available for all ages. The waves are generally best from December through March, with a mini-season for surfing in June and July.
