SNORKEL! There are many snorkeling reefs around Puerto Viejo. Some can be reached by bicycle (Punta Uva and Manzanillo). Others by bus (Cahuita).
Punta Uva and Salsa Brava are our favorite snorkeling locations. Diving courses and trips are available through multiple dive shops, for all levels. Snorkel gear is available to rent in town.
SURFING - THE BEST SURF BEACHES
The best surfing on the Caribbean Coast is at the famous 'Salsa Brava.' This famous surf spot is within walking distance from Cashew Hill, but is for experienced surfers only. There are many other surfing beaches, such as "Beach Break" at Playa Cocles, within the PV area. Lessons are available for all ages. Visit the FINCA LA ISLA BOTANICAL GARDEN !
The Botanical Garden is a working tropical farm, where the owners have been growing local spices, tropical fruits and ornamental plants for over a decade.
The farm is good for birding and wildlife observation (sloths, poison-arrow frogs) greencoast.com/garden.htm .
Visit the PARQUE NACIONAL CAHUITA!
It's just a short bus trip from Cashew Hill. Hike the nature trail and see: monkeys (howler, white-faced), sloths, anteaters, turtles, birds, other forest creatures, ferns, bromeliads, huge jungle trees, and the largest living coral reef in Costa Rica.
After or during your hike, swim at deserted beaches as beautiful as any in the country.
Visit GANDOCA-MANZANILLO WILDLIFE REFUGE
Ride a bike, take the bus or hire a guide to see fabulous birds and wildlife.
Visit the Jaguar Animal Rescue Center to play with baby monkeys, sloths and other orphaned and injured wildlife.
